Giles Covington went to the gallows in 1791 protesting his innocence. The 23-year-old seaman had been convicted of the murder four years previously of David Charteris, a Scottish pedlar, near Abingdon. Among the prime suspects was Richard Kilby, an army deserter, who was arrested but offered to turn King’s Evidence in return for a Royal Pardon. It was he who pointed the finger at Covington. There has been a campaign – sadly unsuccessful – to have the case re-examined, in the hope of obtaining a Royal Pardon for Covington, as well as a proper burial. Having first done time as a teaching aide in an anatomy school, the exhibit the University Museum once labelled simply ‘Englishman’ is yet to rest in peace.
